Staunton Harold SC members enjoyed a fantastic three days of sailing and social activities this weekend.
It opened with an “It’s a Knockout” competition on Friday evening, with on-water and land-based games, with the weather failing to dampen the spirits of the competitors.
Come Saturday morning and the weather cleared in time for the start of the Junior and Youth Championships.  Three races in a gentle breeze with over 20 boats racing ended with a well deserved win by Chloe Felton in her Oppie, followed closely by Emila Torka and Cora Kenmuir-Hogg in the 420 and Darren(!) and Louise Fasey in their Fireball.  Prizes were presented after the races, with all youngsters going home with something tasty!
Mixed in with these three races were two races for the Regatta Cup.  This was won by John Blundell (Solo), hotly pursued by Olli Needham in a Laser and Pete Gray/Simon Forbes in a Fireball from a fleet of over 40 boats.  Notably a few of the Juniors also joined in these races, managing five races in the day – very well done to them.  All this on-water activity was expertly managed by Andy & Lesley Foskett and their team of AOD, safety boat crews and galley helpers.
Saturday evening was the Summer Shindig.  A welcome Pimms got the evening off to a great start, followed by a Hog Roast, salad and home made cakes.  A couple of casks of real ale and music provided by “Jewels” helped the party atmosphere and dancing carried on until quite late in the evening.  The Social team (Pete, Rachel, Simon, Amy and Richard) had done a superb job again.
Sunday morning was the “Big Breakfast” and Lol, Colin and Darren served up 60 covers of “full English” breakfast, most welcome to all the intrepid campers as they staggered out of their tents/camper vans.  The sun came out, the wind picked up, and it was all set for the Club Championships – three races, which included a non-discardable final pursuit race.  Over 40 boats competed in this.  Admittedly some crews were not looking quite as sharp as they had on the Saturday, possibly as a result of the real ale, but there was plenty of close racing and quite a few capsizes.
Coming out ahead of the pack were Mad-Dog and Peter Elver (Fireball), followed by Rob Watson/Simon Forbes (also in a Fireball, and managing a stunning port tack start in the second race) then Pete Gray and Matt Foskett (Scorpion).  There were trophies for a number of other boats: first Laser (Matt Lathoud), first old boat (Darren Fasey/Colin Davis), first over-60 (John Shoesmith).
Overall, it was a fantastic weekend, and our thanks to everyone who helped make it happen.

Plenty of photos were taken (thanks Andy and others) and can all be seen here:
