Alan Bennett excels himself at the Comet Nationals

The 2011 Comet National Championships were held at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy (venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing), over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The event was held jointly with the Trio, Duo and Versa with separate starts.
There were 41 Comets, 9 of which elected to use the Extra rig and 1 Mino. We sailed in Portland Harbour and had strong winds of Force 4-5, gusting F6. Just getting to the start meant you were planing at top speed hanging on to the side with one hand and the tiller and main in the other! Courses were the inverted P with a beat, reach, gybe, reach, run, beat etc.
In the first race I had to do a 720 at the leeward mark but recovered to 12th. In the second race I capsized when well placed on the first reach and recovery took too long to be worth continuing so I retired although the results show a DNC!  On the second day race 3 didn't go so well with a 13th. Race 4 I capsized - again when in 3rd with just the short beat to the finish to go  Race 5 and I led for most of it to come 2nd at the finish. Race 6 7th,  On the Monday race 7 8th, and finally a repeat of race 5 a 2nd again. Going into the final day I was in 10 th place 1 point behind 8th and 9th tied on 33 points and I was able to move up to 7th and 6 points clear on 44 points. If I had all counting results in the top 10 I doubt if I could have been any higher as 6th was on 30 points.
Congratulations to Class Chairman Chris Robinson who became National Champion with 4 wins.
2012 Nationals will be at Bewl Valley SC in Kent. Hope to see SHSC Comets at our Open on Oct 22. Sail against the National Champion!
