Staunton Harold Sailing Club sailors help set a new Guinness World Record for the largest sailing race ever held

Thank you to the helms and crews of the 80 boats who crossed the finish line at Bart’s Bash and all our great volunteers on the day – “We Bashed it!!” – and set a new world record.

Overwhelming numbers of sailors turned out in memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson on Sunday 21st September in some 768 different venues across the globe to set a new Guinness World Record. The criteria for setting the record, which was for 2,500 boats sailing in regattas including at least 25 boats, was reached after processing less than 13 per cent of the results from the participating clubs!  Well done to everyone – sailors and volunteers - who helped make it happen.

Staunton Harold Sailing Club (SHSC) had the 7th biggest turnout in the UK, with 80 boats and some 113 sailors taking part.  For some of our juniors it was their first race – quite an unbeatable start to racing. They join more than 18,000 sailors of all ages and abilities who took part in 68 different countries.

Whilst everyone was a winner on the day, at SHSC, Laser sailors Grahame Newton, Craig Williamson and Simon Foskett took first, second and third respectively. Olympiads – Paul Goodison, David Wilkins and Ali Young likewise came first, second and third globally.  At SHSC we were lucky enough to have Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson’s first Finn, sail number GBR 564 – which he sailed to win a first in the British Nationals in 2000, a European Silver medal in 2001 and a Bronze medal at the World’s in 2003 – join us for the race, sailed by Peter Vinton to a 7th place finish.

A big thank you goes to both Andy and Lesley Foskett and their team of volunteers who ensured that the day was such a huge success – for both sailors and spectators!

Race results are still being uploaded at: www.bartsbash.co.uk/results with the processed data scheduled to be ratified by Guinness World Records before the end of the year.
