Derbyshire Youth Squad - SHSC sailors fly the flag!

DYS SHSC 2013 003 DYS SHSC 2013 008

The water was busy for this year’s DYS despite the date change, with nearly 30 entries. There was a good home representation though it was a clean sweep for Carsington in the overall results. Special mention needs to go to Oliver Hamilton, who sailed extremely well in an optibat with a look of disbelief as he went around ahead of some of the actual optimists!
The weather gave us a wide range of conditions, so the sailors had a lot to deal with. On arrival the reservoir was like a millpond, with some wind by the time of the first race but it was still very light and patchy. There was a nice wind for the second race, followed by a squawl coming through as we prepared for race 3. The safety team were kept busy with lots of capsizes and a few of the less experienced sailors decided to call it a day.
New member Joe Stocker came 4th in the senior fleet (GCSE years and above). Cora Kenmuir-Hogg came 1st and Cameron Smith /Edward Green came 3rd in the intermediate fleet (Secondary School to GCSE years). The junior fleet was convincingly won by Zone Squad sailor Dan Wellbourn-Hesp , but SHSC’s oppie sailors did themselves proud. Kamran Ewbank got a solid 2nd place with 3rd place being battled out by Nathan Smith and Jacob Felton. It was finally won by Nathan.
Well done to all sailors who took part, and it’s good to see so many local young sailors representing their club and doing themselves proud!
