IOCA Midland Champs and Draycote Optimist Open

Thomas Kelsall joins the ranks of winning optimist sailors

Three Staunton sailors joined another 13 sailors at Draycote Water for the return of their Optimist Open, which for this year was also the IOCA Midland Champs. A tough day, with 6 races and varying wind conditions, the sailors were definitely tested!

The day was full of battles, whether at the front, middle or back of the fleet, with different sailors taking the lead in different races. Jacob Felton bookended the results, winning the first and last races.

Further down the fleet, regatta fleet sailor Thomas Kelsall was competing with the main fleet in his first race outside of the club. He may have won the regatta fleet and got the Midland Champs regatta fleet trophy out of default, but it was more than deserved as he finished 12th overall. Tara Ewbank also competed, though she had a spot of bother in race 2 and was unable to finish that race.

The BBQ was fired up in the afternoon so that the sailors were greeted to sausages and burgers as they got off the water after a full day of sailing. The race committee did an excellent job of good quality racing. Thanks also to Sailing Solutions, the onsite chandlery, for providing prizes which were awarded to sailors throughout the fleet.

Results were:

2nd Jacob Felton

13th Tara Ewbank

1st regatta fleet Thomas Kelsall
