IOCA Winter Championships 2016

IOCA Winters

Two Staunton sailors - Jacob felton and Thomas Kelsall - took part in IOCA Winters on 19/20th November at Datchet and both did the club very proud.

A strong fleet of 138 sailors ensured that this was a very competitive event and whilst Jacob is a seasoned competitor, this was Thomas' first venture into main fleet racing. Conditions were cold, but the wind was quite kind, and the tide was out, which meant the sailors had to be organised and well behaved, launching in single file. Thomas had an excellent first day, sitting in a top 50 position over night. Jacob Felton also had an excellent first days with 2 top 20 results.... and a UFD (Uniform Flag Disqualified) for being over the line with 10 seconds to go!

Sunday was still bitterly cold but windier to start with. This made it tougher for young Thomas, though he still scored 51 and 53 before getting 32 as the wind dropped a little. Jacob started off well with a 27th, but managed to get a very impressive rip in his sail during race 5! Despite this, he still got a 45th in both of the remaining races.

Thomas finished his first event in 72nd, and Jacob in 60th. Congratulations on two great results.
