Liz Simons' Caribbean 600

Liz Simons' Caribbean 600

In the last five years Staunton's Liz Simons has been ticking off the classic offshore yacht races around the world including the Fastnet Race, the Sydney Hobart Race and more recently the Caribbean 600 race. The courses are all around 600 miles long, with non-stop racing on specific courses out of sight of land with a mixture of professional super-yachts and smaller amateur teams taking 2 - 6 days to complete the course.

The most recent race was the warmest event with temperatures of around 28 degrees ensuring only tee-shirts and shorts were required as opposed to several layers of thermals and oilies! The race started in Antigua and went in a figure of 8 circuit around a dozen islands including St Martin, St Kitts, Monserrat, Guadeloupe and Barbuda. With a crew of 12, splitting the shifts in two doing 4 hours on and four hours off racing continuously for four days the race featured close battles with competitors - 89 yachts took part and Liz's boat achieved speeds of around 8-12 knots.

For a crew that only got together three days prior to the race a great finish was achieved -  2nd place in the class with a reward of a medal for the boat and a bottle of rum, which only lasted a few minutes after leaving the stage at prize giving!!
