May Bulletin

So the April showers are over, the waters warm and the sailing club has lots to offer for May.
For those of you who haven't yet ventured down this year, the new changing facilities are finished and the new super jetty is in place.

So what's on offer?

Easter Monday

 Firstly don't forget the Easter Egg Races.
 fun races from 1130 onwards for all!!! Of course you stand to win lots of Easter Eggs

Friday April 25th

Friday Night Club and Cruisingkicks off.  Friday nights provide lots of options. Safety cover will be available from 6.30. Fleets often arrange fleet training nights and socials. This particular evening sees the launch of a DI modular course and a Learn to Race session.

Further info: Andy Foskett: sailing@shsc.org.uk. There are always people on hand to give top tips or help rig a club boat if you need assistance. BBQ available for all to use (bring some charcoal please)

April 26th/27th

Junior Squad weekends start. These weekends are often attended by 30 club sailors aged 8-16. They provide extra coaching in ability groups for sailors, once they have achieved RYA Level 1/2 skills. Very sociable for all the family Please sign up in advance

May is a month for lots of additional and special events at SHSC

May Day Bank Holiday Monday (May 5th)

Race Training for All. There will be informal race training for all run by Brett Cokayne and a team of other instructors. Please  email Andy Foskett: sailing@shsc.org.uk if you would like to attend. We predict a beautiful sunny day with superb breeze for all!
Start time: 09.30 rigged but not changed please.
If you are not taking part in the race training you can come down and cruise from 11.30am all day

Wednesday May 7th

Fish and Chip Evening Held on the first Wednesday of every month. The 7pm start is followed by fish and chips supper. Order on the day

Sat May 10th

 Sailability Day:Mark Harden and Kevin Needham have planned our annual Sailability day when we invite lots of local organisations to bring their clients who have a variety of disabilities-learning difficulties/visual/hearing and other physical challenges. They are all offered the opportunity to go for a sail or  in a power boat. Often we have 150 guests. So we need you help whether it be as a helm, host, power boat driver, galley assistant. Please offer to support this event.

Sunday May 11th

Staunton and Melbourne Regatta. A different day of racing with 3 races, 2 to count. We sail as two fleets. Staunton Cup - all helms that have finished first or second in an open meeting/special event or club series. Melbourne Cup - everyone else.

Great prizes and trophies for adults and juniors.


Friday May 16th:Lots going on!

 New Members Night when we invite all new members for 2014 to come along and learn more about the club

Sunday May 18th is set to be a great event.

This is the National Push The Boat Out weekendwhen RYA clubs are encouraged to invite visitors to come and watch/participate in the sport. As RYA Club of the Year this is obviously an event we should support. So the day will have a slightly different format with opportunities for taster sessions, an open invitation for you to invite family and friends to join you, lots of onshore activity, a morning learn to race session and several short races with hopefully on shore commentary!! Sat May 24th and Sunday May 25th

We are hosting the National Comet Association Championships. Lots of exciting competitive sailing to watch and support. Normal club racing Sunday afternoon but water closed on Saturday other than for training courses.

Monday May 26th

You may cruise at SHSC from 11.30am all day but why not take your boat a short distance to Swarkestone SC for theInterclub event. This is an annual event which rotates around the 3 clubs where Burton SC, Swarkestone and SHSC compete for the trophy. We are currently the holders so lets try and win again. All ages, all abilities. Best 5 results count.

Friday May 30th

We then round the month off with a final Learn to Race session in the evening, so why not come down to BBQ and socialise.
