Welcome to our Staunton Harold May update of what's going on at the club


We’ve had some great sailing weather and the summer is just around the corner, come and enjoy a great month of sailing and socials at Staunton Harold! Beyond May we have our fabulous 40th anniversary celebration coming up on June 27/28 – tickets for this action packed weekend are now available at the bar.

Event of the Decade!


SHSC 40th Anniversary / Summer Shindig – This action packed weekend includes both sailing and social activities for everyone including:

• Regatta Cup Saturday

• Biggest BBQ EVER!!!

• Bouncy Castles and Face Painting

• Live music from LEOKAI and SQUEEZE BOX

• Real Ale

• Dancing into the night in the Marquee

• Free Camping

• The Famous Big Breakfast on Sunday

Please note that polo shirts are being ordered to celebrate this event. – very reasonably priced at just £7.50 each – some members have already pre-ordered but there will be some available for sale leading up to the event. We are also possibly going to be offering other logo’d items to celebrate this momentous occasion.


Annual RYA Push the Boat Out – this Sunday


Push the Boat Out – 17th May – this RYA sponsored activity culminates in a day of

‘taster sessions’ where members of the public have signed up to come along and enjoy a sailing session. You will see that this is being promoted on the website /15124, please direct anyone you know who is interested to this address where they can sign up for a ‘taster session’.


Most importantly please bring your friends along to experience sailing at SHSC – please feel free to invite them for a sail in your boat, or just to come and along and take a look at the club. If you would like to volunteer on the day to meet and greet, or help out on the galley please email: japanugent@mac.com


Courses in May/June


Friday night cruising – In addition to cruising for everyone, Poppy’s informal training sessions for all our juniors are now well underway. Juniors don’t forget that this provides the ideal opportunity to sail both your own boat, or to try out some of the club’s dinghies free of charge (Friday night is ‘free’ hire night for all club members, so take the opportunity to try out one of the club hire dinghies). As ever, if the weather is great the BBQ may well be fired up to finish the evening off, so come along and start the weekend on a Friday!


Thursday night cruising – 28th May onwards, cruising for everyone.


“Ladies who like to Launch” – Every Thursday evening from  4th June onwards a special focus on our “ladies who like to launch”, come down and meet some of your fellow sailors and enjoy an informal night sailing. Contact Louise Craig for further details: Nigel_craig@btinternet.com


Junior Squad Weekends – 6th – 7th June from 12 noon – 12 noon, and 20th -21st June from 12 noon to 12 noon. Our last junior squad weekend saw 28 juniors take to the water to build their sailing skills and have fun with their friends. Many camped overnight and finished off the weekend by taking part in the Sunday afternoon races. Upcoming Sailing Events


Interclub Cup – This will be taking place at Burton Sailing Club on Sunday 24th May.


Sailability – 6th June from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon. Please come along and help – your support makes ensures the success of this event. Contact Mark Harden for further details and to volunteer: mark@markharden.co.uk


Memorial Cup – 10th June at 7:00 pm – One handicap race in memory of those who are no longer with us.


Anniversary Cup – 14th June from 11:30 am - Come and take part in this fun event.


Youth and Junior Championships– 27th June time tba – Fun racing for everyone, trophies and fun prizes to be won.


Club Regatta – 27th June at 2:00 pm – Start the SHSC 40th anniversary weekend off with a race and then join in all the fantastic activities that your social committee have lined up for you!


Club Championships– 28th June at 11:30 am – Fun racing for everyone, trophies and fun prizes to be won.

Upcoming Social Events


Quiz ‘n’ Curry night – 17th June, for one night only Lol Hayward and Gray Newton will be running an evening of curry and quizzing to follow on from the Wednesday night sailing. Entry is £7 for the quiz and curry, or £3 for just the quiz, with profits going to the Commodore’s annual charity (Macmillan Cancer Support).  Please book your tickets byFriday 12th June. To book email Lol Hayward at lolhayward@btconnect.com

Race Series


Wednesday – This is proving popular again, so make sure you don’t miss out and remember that it’s Fish and Chip supper afterwards on the first Wednesday of every month.


The summer racing series starts this coming Sunday – 17th May.


Morning Handicap starts at 11:30 am and provides a great opportunity to learn the art of sailboat racing. The format is one start for all classes with prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and to encourage those new to racing there will also be a novice cup. So, if you are new to racing and would like to be entered for the novice cup please contact Lol Hayward – lolhayward@btconnect.com

Sunday sailing


NEW – Lets make Sunday 11:30 – 1:00 pm family sailing time as well.  Why not make it a time to meet up with other families who enjoy cruising around. A great time for junior and youth sailors to meet up and socialise – whether cruising or racing… Give it a try!!

GP14 Open- Well done and thank you to everyone who made this weekend such a success.


RYA Youth National Championships – Well done to all the SHSC sailors who went to this event. Congratulations to Sam Smith who has been selected to represent GBR in the Worlds, which take place in Japan this Summer. And congratulations to Ellie Craig who will be representing GBR in Poland and Germany over the Summer.
