New Committee Boat Official Launch

New Committee Boat Official Launch

Committee BoatFollowing the Commodore's address Pat Newton, honoured guest at the Regatta Weekend , officially launched the new Sport England Lottery Funded Staunton Harold Committee Boat and names her "The Misses Crewe" after the repressed daughters of the Harpur-Crewe family. Sire Vauncey Harpur-Crew, 10th Baronet of Calke Abbey who was a keen ornithologist and who owned the six ponds which were developed into Staunton Harold Reservoir, turned his whole estate into a bird sanctuary (probably driven by his keener interest in shooting and taxidermy). He hated anything modern, thus dinghy sailing would have been unthinkable. A modern committee boat in the middle of the lake would be like his daughters defying the repression of them and hence "The Misses Crewe"!
