Racing Rules proves a popular night out at SHSC

Wednesday 6th January proved a popular night for sailors at Staunton Harold Sailing Club as they hosted a DYS “Rules of Racing” night. More than 40 sailors attended to pick up tips and enjoy an interactive session on the rules of racing led by RYA rules advisors William Jeffcoate and Nadina Lincoln. The audience included sailors from Swarkestone, Burton and Carsington Sailing Clubs in addition to Staunton.

Whilst the evening focused on the importance of the rules, fun was had by all with lively banter from the floor! A role play re-enacting a protest provided a useful illustration of what to expect, and how to prepare yourself if faced with a protest hearing.

Thank you to William Jeffcoate and Nadina Lincoln for an insightful and enjoyable evening. And to the social committee for organising the fish and chip supper break!

This racing rules night was part of a series of training events run by Derbyshire Youth Sailing, with respected guest speakers, aimed at developing sailors racing skills, whether they are new to racing or experienced racing sailors. Three more events are scheduled for the winter season including:

Racing Tactics - Team GBR Finn sailor James Hadden (Swarkestone SC – 20th January)

  • Exercise and Nutrition - Rhiannon Horton (Burton SC – 3rd February)
  • Boat / Sail set up - Hartley Boats, Duncan Adams (Swarkestone SC – 17th February)

Each event starts at 6.45pm, finishes at 8.30pm and is open to all DYS sailors and club members.
