SHSC Optimist and Topper Open

The day started with the question - Regatta fleet or no Regatta fleet! With waves on the reservoir, it wasn't a day for novices... However, 4 relative beginners made a valiant attempt to finish the course on the 1st race, ably assisted by Joe Smith and Ben Haynes in the coach boat. With differing levels of success, most decided that 1 race was enough.

Meanwhile the other 8 Oppies were having fun and being very competitive. After a lunchbreak they went out for 2 races back to back in which the wind picked up further with an incredible high of 33.5 knots. Even for the experienced sailors conditions were proving tricky, with lots of bailing required even if the sailor managed to stay in the boat! Seeing the oppies planing was a fantastic sight for those out on the water.

The topper fleet wasn't as large, but just as competitive. 2 local sailors battled it out to the very end winning 2 races each, with the deciding factor finally being who won the last race. Shrieks of excitement were heard from one particular boat as she went tearing down the reservoir, being carried by a large gust.....

Some very wet and tired sailors returned to shore for refuelling before heading out for the deciding race. As was said on the day, it took a certain level of experience and insanity to be out sailing that day. Thanks must go to the race officers (Tim Gray and Terry Forbes) who let the conditions be the challenge of the day rather than complex race courses but still gave the youngsters some variety. In the end Tom Smith (Notts County) pipped Josh Haynes (Trent Valley) to the Optimist title. Drew Wright (South Staffs) came 3rd, with Saskia Inman rd taking 1st girl (4th overall) and Chloe Felton 1st Staunton sailor (5th overall). Eleanor Craig (Staunton) took the Topper title with Cora Kenmuir-Hogg (Staunton) in 2nd place. Benjamin Allen (Trent Valley) was awarded 1st Regatta sailor, completing 2 of the races.
