SHSC well represented at Inter County Event

Inter County 2016

On Saturday 9th April, Burton SC hosted the 2016 Inter County race event between Derbyshire Youth Sailing (DYS) and Leicester & Rutland Youth Sailing Association (LRYSA). Twenty eight boats - ranging from an Optimist to a Flying 15 - from sailing clubs across Derbyshire and Leicestershire took part in the event. Well done to Eleanor Craig, Matthew Luxton and Matthew Beardshaw - who represented Staunton Harold SC.

The weather did not live up to the forecast with the wind fading completely as the boats launched for the first race. After a short delay and thanks to the wind picking up we were able to start the first race. Josh Haynes in a Laser Radial led the fleet from the start and maintained the lead to win the race, with Eleanor Craig coming third. Matthew Luxton and Matthew Beardshaw both had a good race coming 5th and 15th respectively.

After lunch the wind started building ensuring strong competition on the water with very close racing between the lead Laser Radials (Josh and Eleanor) and the GP14 (Bryn Abendstern / Annabelle Coppinger), but Josh Haynes held out to win the race with Eleanor coming second. The final race saw a reduced fleet size due to the increasing wind conditions with Eleanor Craig (Laser Radial) winning a close fought race.

This was the first Inter County event held by DYS and LRYSA and with the large number of sailors and favourable winds the event was a great success. The overall winner was Josh Haynes (Trent Valley SC), with Eleanor Craig coming 2nd. This was a great achievement, particularly as Eleanor had driven back the night before from the RYA Youth Nationals in Pwllheli. Matthew Luxton finished in 7th place and Matthew Beardshaw finished 20th.

The Inter County shield was considered a draw with LRYSA and DYS being separated by less than one point when scored on average net points. The Inter County Shield was presented Josh Haynes (DYS) and Matthew Haywood / Thomas Evans (LRYSA).
