Solo Open 2012

Solo Open

Staunton Harold Sailing Club's first Solo open meeting for many years took place on Saturday 20th October. A Solo fleet was re-established at the club a year ago and is now thriving.

The forecast for the day was for very light winds; however, sailors arriving at the club were greeted by sunshine and a steady force 2-3 breeze which fortunately held through most of the day.

Eight Staunton Harold sailors were joined by seventeen visitors giving a fantastic turnout of twenty five boats. Sailors from the Midlands circuit came together with a number of visitors from the North to contest the event which formed the final round of the 2012 Midlands Travellers Series.

The wind direction blowing down the reservoir allowed the OOD Simon Kelsall to set courses with a good first beat, with some variation in the courses for the three races.

Michael Simms (5302) from Carsington SC won the first race in the morning, followed home by David Mitchell (5310) in second and Chris Gillard (5312) in third. The second and third races were held back to back after lunch. The second race was also won by Michael Simms, this time with Pete Mitchell (5363) in second and Chris Brown (551) in third. Michael Simms was pushed down to second place in the third race with the win going to Steve Dennison (5263) from Hollingworth Lake SC, Andy Friar (5111) was third.

With two fantastic wins, the overall winner of the 2012 Staunton Harold SC Solo Open was Michael Simms.
