Southport 2015

Southport 2015

The SHSC team of Southport veterans, Darrell, Charles, Corey and Max, along with first timers Henry, George, Nick, Paul, Lynne, Amy, Anita, Jeff and Louise competed last weekend in the 24 hour race, which is billed as one of the top 5 races to do before you die!

The team started arriving Friday morning, along with David and Anita's GP14, and established our camp right at the waters edge. The campsite definitely had a music festival vybe, with the club next to us having a generator powering a very loud sound system and lasers!

Friday evening was billed as party night, with the disco going on until the early hours, the night also heralded a very wet and windy squall, which flattened a few temps on the site.

Next morning the wind had dropped slightly, to give a great afternoons sailing in 16, gusting 20 knots on average.

SHSC were off in the 4th flight, starting with number 31,it was a great sight to see the 65 boats out on the marine lake all preparing for the cannon signalling the start.

Charles and Darrell opened proceedings setting the standard very high!

Each pairing sailed approx. an hour in daylight in order to get a feel for what was an unfamiliar boat for most.

Corey and Max took the first evening shift in their own inimitable style!

Everyone then had an hour and a half stint sailing through the night, with the wind dropping to around 8 knots.

By the morning, our position was 53rd, which we maintained to the end of the race.

Were we ever going to win - no, but what we did have was a lot of fun, fantastic team work and the speediest boat repairs I've ever seen, and we will all be back next year!
