Staunton Harold Sailing Club youth sailors, Sam Smith and Ellie Craig awarded ICON backing for up and coming sports stars

Sam Smith and Ellie Craig have been handed a share of £2,925 in grants from business network ICON. They share the award with 16 other athletes all of whom have been identified as SOME of South Derbyshire's most promising sports performers.

Sam and Ellie will each receive a grant of up to £250, which they can use to help meet costs such as travel, equipment, coaching fees or competition costs to help chase their dreams – congratulations!

Ellie Craig now sails in the RYA Laser Radial Transition Training Squad and has just been awarded East Midlands’ RYA Youth Champion for the second year running!. Last year she was first in the Topper fleet of the National School Sailing Association National Regatta. Whilst Sam Smith was selected as part of the British Worlds team in Germany this year. Sam also claimed fifth place in the Flanders Youth Regatta and first in the silver fleet at the French National Championships.

Councillor Pat Murray, chair of South Derbyshire District Council, and Ilana Freestone, director of Derbyshire Sport which organises the ICON programme and councillor Peter Smith, chair of South Derbyshire Sport, met a selection of the athletes to congratulate them during a presentation at the council offices.

"It's terrific to see the amount of sporting talent we have on our doorstep here in South Derbyshire, highlighted by the fact we have more athletes from the district on the ICON programme this year than ever before," said Councillor Murray.

"It would be great to think that there are ICON athletes from our area who could follow in the footsteps of Adam and Liam by achieving success at the top level, and we will continue to support talented local athletes by providing free access to our leisure facilities across the district."

The ICON business network was set up by Derbyshire Sport as part of the work to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games in Derbyshire.
