Staunton's Chloe Felton takes part in GBR Optimist trials

Chloe Felton GBR Opi trials

Over the bank holiday weekend, Chloe Felton took part in her third GBR Optimist Selection Trials. It was a mixed weekend. Friday afternoon saw three solid races in a force 5 gusting 6. Chloe came off the water with a smile on her face, if a little tired! Her results from that day put her in 29th.

Saturday saw the wind drop and become very unstable due to Portland Bill and a southwesterly. Despite a long sail out into the bay conditions meant that they still hadn't got a successful race in before they moved back to the harbour at lunchtime. They finally got away about 1pm, though the wind was still very shifty and unpredictable. Despite this, they reached their target of four races, after more than 8 hours on the water. Needless to say, the sailors were more than a little tired! HISC's Julia Mellors remained on top, but there was a big change in positions below with the conditions favouring the lighter sailors.

More light wind followed on Sunday, with an increasing forecast. Although it built a little in the afternoon, it remained around 10 knots for most of the racing. With a very strong forecast for Monday, the race team decided to again do 4 races. For Chloe it was a mixed day, with results ranging from 29th to 62nd. She consolidated her position from Saturday, but with only one race remaining there was little scope to move up the leaderboard.

The wind did come, though not as strong as initially expected. So did the fog! This thankfully lifted in time to launch and still make the start on time. The older sailors were eager to get out on the water and make the most of the wind. It was a shame that there was only the one race, though the wind was increasing and the windsurfers and kitesurfers were making the most of it as the racing ended. Despite being in the top 20 at the first windward mark and making gains on the run, Chloe finished the last race of the event in 27th putting her in 51st overall in her penultimate optimist event.
