The Oppie Open!

Junior Champs Oppie Open 2013 274 Junior Champs Oppie Open 2013 380

After last year’s gusts of 30+ knots, we arrived Friday night to a millpond – just as was forecast.... It wasn’t looking good for the racing on Saturday, but when we woke there were ripples on the reservoir – 6 knots, then 7. The excitement was building. It wasn’t much, but it was more than the forecast had shown and it was enough to race in. The race team decided to make the most of it and do 2 races back to back in the morning.
Though we were short on oppie visitors, it was good to see so many home sailors on the water. A real promise for the future..... A special mention needs to go to Maddie Greene and Nathan Smith who achieved some very respectable results after having only learned to sail this year, and Rachel Coopey grinned her way around the race course.
Not surprisingly Chloe Felton lead the way, but her brother Jacob gave her a run for her money beating everyone off the start line in the first race. A simple windward/leeward course was chosen for the second race to increase the tactical element of the racing as there was a big enough split between the optimists and the toppers, but it had some long legs for the little sailors! They coped admirably, even if a couple of 720s were seen. Not much hiking was required, but some good kiting was seen by Ethan Lowing who was also involved in some sibling rivalry on the water!
After a wonderful lunch thanks to the galley, it was back on the water in a race to catch the last of the breeze. With patches of no wind appearing on the reservoir, the race team had a challenge to find a suitable course – one that wasn’t too complicated or too boring and looked to be in regular wind. The oppies did a good job of keeping out of the way of the toppers’ start area only to see the AP flag go up. A few sailors were seen laying in their boats basking in the sunshine! Thankfully ripples started to appear again, a little patchy to start with, but filling in from behind so the race team went for it. The toppers quickly went into sequence followed straight away by the oppies. Unfortunately some of the sailors had trouble remembering the course, relying on following others but finding themselves in the situation where they couldn’t. With Niall Holman getting the course wrong, the battle was on for 3rd place overall. It looked like Kamran Ewbank had taken it, pipping Jacob on the line, until they both admitted they’d missed a mark out. Nothing like a bit of drama! Honesty prevailed though.
