Well done our Oppie sailors in the West Zone Squad Champs....and Chloe wins again..just!

Zone Champs 2013 002

SHSC was represented by 4 optimists in this year’s optimist Zone Champs, all entering the main fleet. This was a step up for 3 who have previously been competing at regatta level. All had a fantastic time with smiles on their faces – most of the time!
For Chloe it was a mixed bag. On the water she finished every race in 1st or 2nd place, being the most consistent sailor. However, she knew her rules well and chose not to give room at the mark when it was called for as it was outside the 5 boat lengths and overlap was broken by 3 boat lengths. Unfortunately she lost the protest because she couldn’t prove when the overlap was broken... That was race 5, which meant that she had to go into the final race and finish no more than 2 places behind her nearest competitor. They finished that race neck and neck – neither of them was sure who had won the race! Dan took the win, but Chloe still won the event.
Meanwhile, Peter Nugent, Kamran Ewbank and Jacob Felton were competing further down the field. For Peter it was only his 2nd event outside of the club and he competed well, getting a little wet on Sunday! He finished 17th overall.
Jacob put everything he had into the racing. He tired over the weekend but he kept giving it all he had and kept the boat upright despite Sunday’s stronger conditions. He finished 13th overall.
Kamran felt he had a bit of an ‘off day’ on Saturday and had a much better day on Sunday, pulling in some 13th places to finish 15th overall.
All in all, a good weekend for the Staunton sailors. Well done to them all!
