Committee

  • Nick WatersCommodore

I learnt to sail in Bosun dinghies when I was at school (a long time ago). After a lengthy "dry" spell due to family and work commitments I rediscovered the joy of sailing in 1992, bought a Laser and joined Staunton Harold SC. I joined the Committee as Hon. Secretary in 2004, became Vice Commodore in 2010 and Commodore in 2011.

I was support crew and shore side logistics for husband and four sons, now a perfect light weather crew in the Fireball. I have been on the Committee for over 10 years as R.C.Social, Junior Squad coordinator, Hon. Secretary and now Vice-Commodore.

Simon joined the committee in 2008 as treasurer. He is part of the club’s active fireball scene. When not on the water he can usually be found chasing round the clubhouse looking for change for the bar or searching for one of his two young children!

I discovered sailing through Scouts when aged 12, joined Swarkestone with my parents sailing a Graduate then a Fireball. I built a Minisail, and joined Burton S.C. (Foremark) in 1977 sailing Scorpions. Later joined Staunton Harold in 1991 sailing a Miracle then Fireballs. I became R.C. Sailing in 2007.

My introduction to water sports was through coastal sailing in yachts around the Solent and Mediterranean, eventually leading to a RYA Coastal Skipper qualification. However, increasing work commitments in 2008 encouraged me to seek out sailing opportunities closer to home, leading to enrolment on a RYA Level 2 dinghy course at SHSC. I then immediately joined the very competitive but friendly SHSC Laser fleet where I can still be found sailing beyond my abilities most weekends. I joined the committee in 2010 and assist with maintenance of club hire equipment.

Grahame Newton aka social sec…… I’m the one at the back trying to look serious, they call me ‘Gandhi’ because of my healthy naturally tanned complexion !!
I’ve been sailing since ‘Adam woz a lad’ so about 40yrs now phew !! sailed everything pretty much, but mainly Laser’s, Int 14 and Fireballs and most Sunday’s you’ll find me at the back of 14966 with Mark. I’ve been a member of SHSC since the start so I tend to know most if not all and I think most know me or at least have ‘heard’ me as I’m not known for keeping quiet which is why I landed the job of social sec. Please feel free to contact me……. 07792 329090

I joined SHSC early in 2010, after a lengthy lay off from sailing. During my teens I was a regular Wayfarer dinghy sailor, and was frequently off windsurfing in all weathers and seasons. More recently, I am a GP14 sailor, and enjoy a regular mix of both racing (not too seriously) and cruising with my children.
